He worked as music director in Malayalam films such as Chathurangam (2002) and Thandavam (2002), Priyadarshan's Kanchivaram (2008), Mohanlal's Alexander the Great and Oru Naal Varum. He has sung more than 35,000 songs for films in Malayalam, Tamil, Hindi, Kannada and Telugu. The Malayalam movie Chithram (1988) directed by Priyadarshan, starring Mohanlal, was the first where Sreekumar sang all the songs. However, with that, my dream of getting my name into the song book, crashed.Sreekumar made his debut in the Malayalam movie Coolie (1983) Directed by Ashok Kumar. They thought, some amateur singer might have sung the track. Maybe Dasettan also didn’t know about it. When the final stage of the song reached Madras, somebody recorded the song with Yesudas. May be, producer and director might have felt that the song wasn’t perfect. “But when the movie was released, that song was sung by Dasettan. And I boasted to my friends, saying that my name also will appear amidst Yesudas name in the next edition.” So I dreamed of my name along with Chitra will also appear in the latest edition of the song book.
In the book, names like Yesudas, Janaki and Jayachandran were everywhere. “Those times, there are song books comprising movie song lyrics. Female voice for the song was by Chitra.” Music to the lyrics was given by my brother MG Radhakrishnan. “My first song was ‘pranaya vasandham thaliraniyanayi…’ from the movie ‘Njan Ekananu’ directed by P Chandrakumar and produced by Madhu. Music was by MG Radhakrishnan, elder brother of the playback singer. The song was ‘pranaya vasandham thaliraniyanyi…’ in the movie ‘Njan Ekananu’ directed by P Chandrakumar. In an interview given to FM, Sreekumar shared his pain of listening to his first song in Yesudas’s voice. But he had to listen to his first song, a long cherished dream, in the voice of Yesudas when the movie of the song got released. His unique voice, lone singing style and voice familiarity with actor Mohanlal helped playback singer MG Sreekumar rein the industry for a remarkable period.
